If you’re looking for high-thrills fun, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is a great option! These awesome dunes feature a beautiful color and are great for those looking for off-road adventures, or just for fun, scenic hikes!
These lovely dunes have been around anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 years, and are ever-changing! The wind plays a big part in how these dunes form and change from year to year! The sand comes from ancient Navajo sandstone, giving the sand its rich, reddish pink color! A space between the surrounding Moccasin and Moquith allows air to funnel and pick up grains of sand from the eroding sandstone, carrying it to the dunes. These wind patterns can influence the shift of the dunes, causing them to move up to 50 feet per year!
There is some animal and plant life to be found on the dunes, including the unique Coral Pink tiger beetle, which is only found in the Coral Pink Sand Dunes! You should also be sure to take a hike to check out the ancient Ponderosa Pines, which have grown up out of the coral sand and are a great addition to the beautiful landscape. You can even get some nice views of nearby Zion National Park!
